Headaches

If you sufferer from chronic headaches, you know what a pain they are. What you may not realize, though, is that your chronic headaches might be related to your dental or oral health.

While you might be thinking that this seems backwards, it is probably the first thing you should consider, since headaches and dentistry can be closely related. Your dentist can determine if your headaches are dentally related, or due to some other cause.

Neck issues can also lead to headaches, and neck and bite issues are often closely related as well.

Food sensitivities, tumors, skull shape, Lyme Disease, sleep disorders, and other medical issues may also be involved. It is important to identify cause of the problem before trying to apply a solution!

Relief from Dental-Related Headaches

There are many different classifications of headaches: for instance, migraines, cluster headaches, and of course tension headaches, to name a few.

It is nearly impossible to tell exactly what causes the majority of headaches, but many people suffer headaches from stress or inflammation of the temporomandibular joint (jaw joint), or TMJ.

This condition is called Temporomandibular Disorder, or TMD. The jaw joint has a very wide range of motion, with the ability to open, slide, and move side to side. The TMJ is the only joint that has two sides that work in tandem. When they fail to work in tandem, it can cause inflammation of one or both sides, due to the stresses placed on the joint.

There are many things that can cause TMD, including:

  • Missing teeth
  • Trauma
  • Excessive or difficult chewing habits
  • Crooked teeth
  • Sleep issues

BOTOX® for Headache Treatment

Believe it or not, there is a place for BOTOX in dentistry! BOTOX has been used for countless other uses in medicine including headache relief. When your jaw muscles are strained, they contract. This contraction leads to muscle spasm, pain and soreness, as well as a buildup of lactic acid and other waste metabolites. BOTOX injections can help prevent the muscles from tensing excessively around your jaw line. As a result, your muscles can relax and you can experience relief.
