Invisalign on the Go: What You Need

Are you undergoing Invisalign treatment? Today, our Calgary dentists share a few things you need to know about keeping your clear aligners fresh and clean.

Invisalign clear aligners are designed to let you keep living your life the way you want, while still providing you with the orthodontic treatment you require.

While your life will probably not be drastically altered to accommodate your orthodontic treatment, there are a few things you will have to be mindful of. You will have to brush and floss your teeth more often and keep your aligners safe when they aren't in your mouth in order to keep them clean and fresh. Therefore there are several essential items you need to carry with you during your treatment.

Bring A Pouch With You

To start, you’ll need a pouch to keep all of your Invisalign maintenance items in. It needs to be something durable that you can toss in your bag, backpack, desk, or locker. You're also going to want the pouch to be zippered, with a lining that's water-resistant (for damp toothbrushes).

Keep Your Aligners in a Case

When your aligners are not in your mouth, they should be clean and stored in your aligner case. Keep the case with you at all times so that you have a safe, clean place to store your aligners while you're eating, drinking, or brushing your teeth.

Those who do not carry their aligner case with them have a higher chance of breaking or damaging their aligners, which will cause delays in treatment while you wait for the tray to be replaced.

Use Lip balm

Keep your favourite lip balm in your kit. Your lips can get dry during orthodontic treatment, especially while you’re getting used to wearing your aligners. Be prepared so you don't experience any added discomfort.

Carry a Travel Toothbrush, Toothpaste, and Floss

Each time you take out your aligners to eat, you should brush and floss your teeth afterward. You really don’t want food particles and debris stuck between your aligners and your teeth for the rest of the day, so be sure you brush and floss thoroughly before putting your aligners back in your mouth.

“Outie” Aligner Removal Tool

Occasionally, your aligners may be especially tight, especially when you first change over to a new set. This handy tool will help you detach your aligner from your teeth in these cases.

Try Breath Spray or Mints

You can’t chew gum with your Invisalign aligners in place, so if you're concerned about having bad breath, mints or breath spray will help you feel more confident.
