What is a Same-Day Restoration?
Normally, placing a dental crown, inlay or onlay requires more than one visit to the dentist, but by using CEREC technology, our dentists can perform the entire procedure in one visit.
CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) is a system that allows for the fabrication of same-day ceramic or porcelain dental restorations. Our Calgary dentists use CEREC technology to place crowns, veneers, inlays and onlays in just one appointment.
For dental patients, using the CEREC process means that they can avoid messy impressions, wearing temporary dental restorations, or having to return to be re-frozen to insert the permanent crown or inlay. Instead, the milling of the inlay can often be completed and bonded into place that same day.
How are CEREC Restorations Made?
First, the dentist will remove any old fillings and existing decay. Then, the tooth is shaped and refined. The tooth is then scanned using a 3D camera, and a three-dimensional picture of your tooth appears on the computer monitor. You can watch the CEREC screen as the dentist manipulates the 3D software to design your new restoration.
By using CEREC technology, the dentist digitally designs a piece that will replace the missing part of the tooth and to fit in like a piece of a jigsaw puzzle. The result is the design for a digitally customized replacement for your missing or damaged tooth structure.
Next, the CEREC acquisition unit sends your design to a robotic milling machine for processing. A ceramic block that matches the shading of your own natural tooth colour is selected and placed in the milling unit, where a precise diamond-cut ceramic restoration is created, just for you. The restoration can be custom-stained and glazed if desired to mimic your natural teeth. This new custom-made restoration is then bonded into place and any necessary adjustments are made for your function and comfort.
Within a short time, your new CEREC restoration is complete!
