Oral Examinations

Maintaining good oral hygiene is one of the most important things you can do for your teeth and gums. Healthy teeth not only look and feel good, they make it possible for you to eat and speak properly.

More importantly, good oral hygiene affects your overall well-being. Your hygienist is your first line of defense for cavity detection as well. Your hygienist will alert your dentist when you have a tooth that may need a cavity treatment or needs to be filled.

Here are a few simple steps that you can take between visits that can greatly decrease your risk of developing tooth decay, gum disease and other dental problems:

  • Brush thoroughly at least twice a day
  • Floss daily
  • Use remineralizing dental products (including toothpaste)
  • Use mouthwash or a remineralizing rinse (if your dental team member advises you to do so)

Preventing Gum Disease

A proper oral hygiene routine is one of the best things you can do for your oral health. By effectively removing plaque and bacteria twice a day, you can help prevent painful periodontal disease from developing in your mouth.

If you do develop this condition, our Calgary dentists are here to help.

Dental Hygiene Cleaning

Before or after your exam, your dental hygienist will perform a cleaning of your teeth and gums to help prevent and treat disease.

To begin, they will use a scaler to remove any tartar and plaque build-up. Next they will use a polisher to remove any leftover stains or plaque, followed by thorough flossing.

Fluoride Treatment

If you are at a heightened risk of tooth decay, your dental hygienist or dentist may also recommend a fluoride treatment. Fluoride is a natural mineral that can help to strengthen tooth enamel to prevent or slow down tooth decay.
