What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium screw that functions like a natural tooth root. The implant is surgically placed into the jaw bone and then integrates with the natural bone to serve as an anchor for tooth replacement.
They can be used to hold crowns, bridges, dentures and hybrid prosthetics in place. When we use implants, these tooth replacements are able to function similarly to a natural tooth.
Dental implants can help to prevent surrounding teeth from shifting, improve bite issues or jaw joint pain, and help restore facial tissues and appearance.
Why Replace Missing Teeth?
If a tooth is missing, the teeth surrounding the gap may begin to shift out of place and cause misalignment issues. The bone around the area may also begin to deteriorate, resulting in loss of support for the adjacent teeth and could lead to further tooth loss.
How are Dental Implants Different than Natural Teeth?
With single implants and some bridges, we sometimes find that you get more food stuck between the teeth when eating, because the implant is smaller in diameter than the natural teeth, so the gap at the gum line is sometimes larger than normal.
Also, natural teeth have a ligament that allows some movement. Implants do not have a ligament, so they feel a bit different.
Dental implant-retained teeth need close monitoring over the years to ensure that they are not only cleaned regularly like real teeth, but to also to ensure that they are not getting overloaded.
Implant Crowns
At Orijin Dental, we provide implant crown services for patients who are good candidates with missing teeth, and who want to maintain the natural look of their smile.
What are Implant Crowns?
An implant retained crown is a crown that is held in place by a dental implant, rather than a natural tooth. Implants can be used to support bridges, dentures, hybrid prosthesis, and other things to replace missing parts. The crown is the portion that is attached to the implant, which is the part that you can see in your mouth. This may require bone grafting.
The implant is placed to the jaw bone by surgery and the crown is attached to the implant to fill the gap of the missing tooth.
